What Are the Different Stages of Laying a Gravel Driveway

How to Lay a Gravel for a Driveway

A gravel driveway is an attractive and cost-effective option. Additionally, it can help to reduce the risk of flooding as water will easily drain away freely, unlike concrete or tarmac driveways.

Laying a gravel drive is simple. However, it can be hard work! But it is straightforward enough to be done by a novice DIY enthusiast.

Removing the pre-existing base.

When it comes to building a gravel driveway, you need to take into consideration all the preparation needed. This is the hardest part of the process, as it involves a lot of digging!

Creating the sub-base

Your gravel drive consists of 3 parts. The sub-base, membrane, and of course, the gravel. The sub-base is extremely important as it has to support heavy loads. It will help if you have an even surface, as this will create a flat and solid base.

Applying the weed membrane

This should be laid under the gravel and on top of the sub-base. So roll your weed barrier out to cover the sub-base or soil and then peg it firmly into position.

Choose your gravel

Ideally, you should choose a decorative aggregate that is tough and angular. Also, a 14mm or 20mm driveway gravel chip will create the best surface. We don’t advise laying a pebble driveway, as they are rounded stones that move around when you drive on them. A shingle driveway is the same as a gravel driveway.

Make sure you calculate the right amount of decorative aggregate for your driveway. Typically, 1 bulk bag covers approximately 10m² at a depth of 50mm, so you can use this to calculate how much you will need.
